Narrative:

Called FSS before flight for a VFR briefing. Ask if there would be any parachute jumping at ellijay gilmer county airport. He said no there would not. He checked NOTAMS and was none. On the way up to mountains crossed airport and stated on unicom I was transiting from south to north. On way back on V311 10 NM north nello 5 or more skydivers fell in front of plane. I made hard left turn to miss them. On the ground when back called FSS, advised what had happened. He checked NOTAMS, wasn't any. I felt a call to FSS and ATC clearance would help. That way VFR pilots would know what's going on and ATC could call traffic.
