Narrative:
Upon gear retraction after takeoff from dtw left gear door warning light illuminated. Recycled gear handle -- no help. Extended landing gear. Left main landing gear did not indicate down and locked. Retracted landing gear. Asked for radar vectors and 5000 ft altitude from dtw departure control. Was given radar vectors for 2 hours for time to work on problem. ATC extremely helpful. All applicable procedures from aircraft flight manual worked through telephone patch to iah maintenance control and seattle for further suggestions. Tried several maneuvers to dislodge landing gear to no avail. After 2 hours of trying all real suggestions and approaching min fuel, made preparations for emergency landing. Thorough brief from captain and landed. Did the best we could. No injuries to 7 crew, 127 passenger. Min damage to aircraft. Now looking back on this incident we had everything in our favor except the jammed landing gear. The WX was ideal, we had plenty of fuel, ATC was extremely helpful, we had our maintenance people and manufacturer for additional ideas, the captain's leadership, public relations, aviation skills were exceptional. The so was knowledgeable and full of ideas. Flight attendants very professional.
