Narrative:
We were sbound at 4000 ft and issued small aircraft Y traffic at 12 O'clock opposite direction at 3000 ft and were told we would be given further descent after passing that traffic. Told controller we did not have the traffic, but were looking. Controller then questioned the small aircraft Y on his altitude and he said 4000 ft. Controller then turned the small aircraft Y west and us east. It was only after this turn did we see the small aircraft Y pass off our right side.
