Narrative:
I went on a short business flight from hardwick field. On leaving, the local flight instructor informed me that the airport would be closed at XB00 for runway painting. Since the WX was excellent, I did not call flight service (I did watch the WX channel), and on returning at XA30, found runway 21 marked with an X. Workmen were preparing to put an X on runway 3. Since there was no wind, I landed on runway 3, I landed long so as not to interfere with the workmen and had checked to see that the runway was ok and that no vehicles were on it. After landing, I called flight service and learned that the airport had been closed at XA00. Obviously, I should have called before the flight and not have taken someone else's word for when the airport would be closed. However, I think that the FAA should inform local officials of the times of closing and have this posted at the airport. On checking afterwards, I learned that the airport manager was not aware of the time that the airport would be closed.

Title: SMA PLT LANDS ON RWY WITH 'X' ON OPPOSITE END.
Narrative: I WENT ON A SHORT BUSINESS FLT FROM HARDWICK FIELD. ON LEAVING, THE LCL FLT INSTRUCTOR INFORMED ME THAT THE ARPT WOULD BE CLOSED AT XB00 FOR RWY PAINTING. SINCE THE WX WAS EXCELLENT, I DID NOT CALL FLT SVC (I DID WATCH THE WX CHANNEL), AND ON RETURNING AT XA30, FOUND RWY 21 MARKED WITH AN X. WORKMEN WERE PREPARING TO PUT AN X ON RWY 3. SINCE THERE WAS NO WIND, I LANDED ON RWY 3, I LANDED LONG SO AS NOT TO INTERFERE WITH THE WORKMEN AND HAD CHKED TO SEE THAT THE RWY WAS OK AND THAT NO VEHICLES WERE ON IT. AFTER LNDG, I CALLED FLT SVC AND LEARNED THAT THE ARPT HAD BEEN CLOSED AT XA00. OBVIOUSLY, I SHOULD HAVE CALLED BEFORE THE FLT AND NOT HAVE TAKEN SOMEONE ELSE'S WORD FOR WHEN THE ARPT WOULD BE CLOSED. HOWEVER, I THINK THAT THE FAA SHOULD INFORM LCL OFFICIALS OF THE TIMES OF CLOSING AND HAVE THIS POSTED AT THE ARPT. ON CHKING AFTERWARDS, I LEARNED THAT THE ARPT MGR WAS NOT AWARE OF THE TIME THAT THE ARPT WOULD BE CLOSED.
