Narrative:

Landed runway 4L and turned left on taxiway echo. Tower cleared us to 'golf' via 'bravo' and hold short of runway 8L. Did not see taxiway bravo, due to faded taxi line, no sign indicating bravo taxiway, approximately 120 degree left turn off of 4L, and darkness. By the time I realized I had missed 'bravo' I was on 8L. Note: hold short line for runway 8L/26R faded and very hard to see at night, also sign 8L/26R on right hand side faded and not lighted. Runway 8L/26R sign on left side located approximately 120 ft to left of taxiway echo (not easily noticed). Noticed airplane lights at west end of runway 8L appeared to be in position for takeoff. Continued across 8L on echo and contacted ground. Ground cleared us to inter-island terminal. While taxiing to terminal, ground asked me to call tower. Telephoned tower from terminal and was told I had crossed 8L without authorization and that tower was required by the FAA to fill out an incident report. The report will go to the local FSDO office. I believe this runway incursion occurred because of the following reasons: taxi lines and hold lines faded and very hard to see at night. I think the taxi lines should be repainted on a regular basis preferably with a reflective paint. No sign indicating taxiway bravo. I believe a lighted sign with an arrow indicating direction would help. Faded, non- lighted runway 8L/26R sign on right side of taxiway echo should be repaired so it would be more visible. Runway 8L/26R sign on left side of taxiway echo located approximately 120 ft left of taxiway. I think this sign should be moved closer to echo taxiway.

Title: CAPT OF COMMUTER BECAME CONFUSED AND CROSSED ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION.

Narrative: LANDED RWY 4L AND TURNED L ON TAXIWAY ECHO. TWR CLRED US TO 'GOLF' VIA 'BRAVO' AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 8L. DID NOT SEE TAXIWAY BRAVO, DUE TO FADED TAXI LINE, NO SIGN INDICATING BRAVO TAXIWAY, APPROX 120 DEG L TURN OFF OF 4L, AND DARKNESS. BY THE TIME I REALIZED I HAD MISSED 'BRAVO' I WAS ON 8L. NOTE: HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 8L/26R FADED AND VERY HARD TO SEE AT NIGHT, ALSO SIGN 8L/26R ON R HAND SIDE FADED AND NOT LIGHTED. RWY 8L/26R SIGN ON L SIDE LOCATED APPROX 120 FT TO L OF TAXIWAY ECHO (NOT EASILY NOTICED). NOTICED AIRPLANE LIGHTS AT W END OF RWY 8L APPEARED TO BE IN POS FOR TKOF. CONTINUED ACROSS 8L ON ECHO AND CONTACTED GND. GND CLRED US TO INTER-ISLAND TERMINAL. WHILE TAXIING TO TERMINAL, GND ASKED ME TO CALL TWR. TELEPHONED TWR FROM TERMINAL AND WAS TOLD I HAD CROSSED 8L WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION AND THAT TWR WAS REQUIRED BY THE FAA TO FILL OUT AN INCIDENT RPT. THE RPT WILL GO TO THE LCL FSDO OFFICE. I BELIEVE THIS RWY INCURSION OCCURRED BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING REASONS: TAXI LINES AND HOLD LINES FADED AND VERY HARD TO SEE AT NIGHT. FADED, NON- LIGHTED RWY 8L/26R SIGN ON R SIDE OF TAXIWAY ECHO SHOULD BE REPAIRED SO IT WOULD BE MORE VISIBLE. RWY 8L/26R SIGN ON L SIDE OF TAXIWAY ECHO LOCATED APPROX 120 FT L OF TAXIWAY. I THINK THIS SIGN SHOULD BE MOVED CLOSER TO ECHO TAXIWAY.
