Narrative:
While at cruise at 3500 the smell of burnt insulation was smelled, no smoke was sighted. Electrical system was turned off with master switch, all navigation equipment (radio, VOR, DME, ADF, and LORAN) was then turned off. No smoke was sighted, and smell/odor appeared to decrease. Master was turned on and 1 radio, as I was receiving VFR flight following I advised waco approach that I had a smell of smoke and requested a vector to nearest airport. Shortly afterwards I landed at mexia airport; called waco and advised them that I was down and thanked them. At mexia instrument cluster was opened up and inspected under supervision of an a and P. The left fuel gauge resistor winding had broken and burnt. No other damage was found. A temporary repair was made and aircraft flown to destination.

Title: SMT HAS SMELL OF BURNING INSULATION IN COCKPIT. SHUT DOWN ELECTRICAL. USED 1 RADIO TO REQUEST VECTORS TO CLOSEST ARPT.
Narrative: WHILE AT CRUISE AT 3500 THE SMELL OF BURNT INSULATION WAS SMELLED, NO SMOKE WAS SIGHTED. ELECTRICAL SYS WAS TURNED OFF WITH MASTER SWITCH, ALL NAV EQUIP (RADIO, VOR, DME, ADF, AND LORAN) WAS THEN TURNED OFF. NO SMOKE WAS SIGHTED, AND SMELL/ODOR APPEARED TO DECREASE. MASTER WAS TURNED ON AND 1 RADIO, AS I WAS RECEIVING VFR FLT FOLLOWING I ADVISED WACO APCH THAT I HAD A SMELL OF SMOKE AND REQUESTED A VECTOR TO NEAREST ARPT. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS I LANDED AT MEXIA ARPT; CALLED WACO AND ADVISED THEM THAT I WAS DOWN AND THANKED THEM. AT MEXIA INST CLUSTER WAS OPENED UP AND INSPECTED UNDER SUPERVISION OF AN A AND P. THE L FUEL GAUGE RESISTOR WINDING HAD BROKEN AND BURNT. NO OTHER DAMAGE WAS FOUND. A TEMPORARY REPAIR WAS MADE AND ACFT FLOWN TO DEST.
