Narrative:
No problem with either radio no clearance delivery, ground control, tower prior to takeoff. Upon handoff to departure unable to contact departure on first frequency. Finally able to contact tower to get second frequency. No problem on second frequency however, during this 5-7 min time period became VMC in or near a TCA on an IFR clearance. At the time during radio failure elected to remain in VMC conditions regardless of altitude assigned.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA LOST RADIO CONTACT WITH MSY ON CLB OUT FROM NEW. PLT REMAINED VMC UNTIL RADIO CONTACT REGAINED.
Narrative: NO PROBLEM WITH EITHER RADIO NO CLRNC DELIVERY, GND CTL, TWR PRIOR TO TKOF. UPON HDOF TO DEP UNABLE TO CONTACT DEP ON FIRST FREQ. FINALLY ABLE TO CONTACT TWR TO GET SECOND FREQ. NO PROBLEM ON SECOND FREQ HOWEVER, DURING THIS 5-7 MIN TIME PERIOD BECAME VMC IN OR NEAR A TCA ON AN IFR CLRNC. AT THE TIME DURING RADIO FAILURE ELECTED TO REMAIN IN VMC CONDITIONS REGARDLESS OF ALT ASSIGNED.
