Narrative:

Arrived at pbi and while waiting to depart pbi in same aircraft a 'ground personnel' advised the cockpit crew there was a hole in the baggage compartment. He informed us they had in the past just taped the hole, but now it was required to have sheet metal to repair it. He told us maintenance was on the way. About 20 mins later the same person told us we were fixed and ready to go. We departed and flew to rdu. A week later, the captain told me he had been called by the chief pilot and told we had flown the airplane from pbi to rdu with a hole in the baggage compartment. It seems the mechanic came to the airplane, began work, and was then called away. Someone assumed the mechanic was done and passed the word to us the work was complete.
