Narrative:

Prior to departure, turbulence was reported light to moderate south of detroit metropolitan airport. After takeoff we were given clearance to climb to 240. Climbing through 180 we encountered severe turbulence in clear air. The airplane was being flown by flight guidance system and began rolling violently left and right. The captain disengaged the autoplt simultaneously pushing nose over to 6 degrees below horizon trying to descend airplane below turbulence. The airplane continued to climb for a min and then descended. We were given new clearance to descend to 14000 ft. The air smoothed out as we descended. All passenger and flight attendants were buckled in and there were no reported injuries.
