Narrative:
After landing on runway 18 at dca, during rollout, tower said, 'turn right (I began the right turn as we were approaching taxiway east and runway 21). Taxiway a, runway 21 is not available. I was able to turn hard into taxiway east and avoid runway 21. Usually aircraft are cleared from runway 18 onto runway 21 and then to the ramp. These late instructions almost resulted in a runway incursion. Things move quickly at dca and we all try to clear the runway as soon as possible. Better instructions would have been, 'continue across runway 21 and turn right taxiway a.'
