Narrative:
After approximately 25 mins of flight and at FL350 'C' flight attendant reported feeling light headed, nauseous. A DH pilot also reported some constriction in breathing. Cockpit oxygen was administered to 'C' flight attendant and a descent to FL240 was initiated to preclude ozone exposure. Additional symptoms were now reported by the other 3 flight attendants (listless, slight tingling). Investigated nature of hazardous material package in pit one with memphis operations. Material was coded H-5 (radioactive citrate, chloride liquid). At approximately 45-50 mins of flight, cockpit crew began to feel slight 'ozone like' symptoms (headache, tingling). Crew went on oxygen and completed descent and landing without incident. Upon arrival at gate and after passenger commenced deplaning a fire on the right wing was reported by the aft flight attendant. An orderly evacuate/evacuation was conducted through the forward entry door and aft exit (air stair). No incidents. Apparently APU torched very late in starting cycle after crew had assumed it was stable.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF LGT RPTING POSSIBILITY OF OZONE ENCOUNTER THAT CAUSED CABIN ATTENDANTS TO BECOME NAUSEOUS WITH SOME TINGLING.
Narrative: AFTER APPROX 25 MINS OF FLT AND AT FL350 'C' FLT ATTENDANT RPTED FEELING LIGHT HEADED, NAUSEOUS. A DH PLT ALSO RPTED SOME CONSTRICTION IN BREATHING. COCKPIT OXYGEN WAS ADMINISTERED TO 'C' FLT ATTENDANT AND A DSCNT TO FL240 WAS INITIATED TO PRECLUDE OZONE EXPOSURE. ADDITIONAL SYMPTOMS WERE NOW RPTED BY THE OTHER 3 FLT ATTENDANTS (LISTLESS, SLIGHT TINGLING). INVESTIGATED NATURE OF HAZARDOUS MATERIAL PACKAGE IN PIT ONE WITH MEMPHIS OPS. MATERIAL WAS CODED H-5 (RADIOACTIVE CITRATE, CHLORIDE LIQUID). AT APPROX 45-50 MINS OF FLT, COCKPIT CREW BEGAN TO FEEL SLIGHT 'OZONE LIKE' SYMPTOMS (HEADACHE, TINGLING). CREW WENT ON OXYGEN AND COMPLETED DSCNT AND LNDG WITHOUT INCIDENT. UPON ARR AT GATE AND AFTER PAX COMMENCED DEPLANING A FIRE ON THE R WING WAS RPTED BY THE AFT FLT ATTENDANT. AN ORDERLY EVAC WAS CONDUCTED THROUGH THE FORWARD ENTRY DOOR AND AFT EXIT (AIR STAIR). NO INCIDENTS. APPARENTLY APU TORCHED VERY LATE IN STARTING CYCLE AFTER CREW HAD ASSUMED IT WAS STABLE.
