Narrative:
We were cleared for a visual approach to runway 33 at fsd and advised that another aircraft was landing on runway 21 to hold short of our runway. We were not told to roll all the way to the end of the runway. After a normal landing, the first available exit from the runway was runway 21/03. The captain began the turnoff and the tower controller advised us to exit at the end. Unfortunately we had already committed ourselves to the turn and a reversal of turn was not possible. The area was clear so we continued to taxi off runway 33 and runway 21 onto the parallel taxiway. The tower controller felt we had taxied onto a runway that had been 'reserved' for the prior landed aircraft. The light aircraft that had landed on runway 21 was finally visible as we cleared all runways. It was apparently at taxi speed and well short (2000 plus ft) of the intersection.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR ON AFTER LNDG ROLL TURNS ONTO ACTIVE RWY WITH LNDG TFC.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 33 AT FSD AND ADVISED THAT ANOTHER ACFT WAS LNDG ON RWY 21 TO HOLD SHORT OF OUR RWY. WE WERE NOT TOLD TO ROLL ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE RWY. AFTER A NORMAL LNDG, THE FIRST AVAILABLE EXIT FROM THE RWY WAS RWY 21/03. THE CAPT BEGAN THE TURNOFF AND THE TWR CTLR ADVISED US TO EXIT AT THE END. UNFORTUNATELY WE HAD ALREADY COMMITTED OURSELVES TO THE TURN AND A REVERSAL OF TURN WAS NOT POSSIBLE. THE AREA WAS CLR SO WE CONTINUED TO TAXI OFF RWY 33 AND RWY 21 ONTO THE PARALLEL TAXIWAY. THE TWR CTLR FELT WE HAD TAXIED ONTO A RWY THAT HAD BEEN 'RESERVED' FOR THE PRIOR LANDED ACFT. THE LIGHT ACFT THAT HAD LANDED ON RWY 21 WAS FINALLY VISIBLE AS WE CLRED ALL RWYS. IT WAS APPARENTLY AT TAXI SPD AND WELL SHORT (2000 PLUS FT) OF THE INTXN.
