Narrative:
My first approach to fairfield county airport was missed. I flew it poorly and got nervous. On my second approach I turned right for procedure turn inbound instead of the correct published left turn. I was unaware of the mistake until I popped out much closer to the airport than I expected and started to wonder why. I landed at winnsboro safely. This was my first instrument flight alone since my instrument rating. Conditions were poor. My ADF went crazy while flying through heavy rain but worked fine when the rain subsided - this occurrence rattled me somewhat (in the en route phase). I bit off more than I could chew. I was anxious to utilize my new rating in actual IMC, but did not properly prepare myself. I'm back under the hood for a while and have come to grips with my limited experience. I was only 30 mi from my home airport and had my wife pick me up instead of trying to fly back.
