Narrative:
After passing the santa monica VOR, we were assigned a 070 heading and given further descent. Approximately 5 mi east of smo, approach control called an air carrier medium large transport Y as traffic in our 1 O'clock position to land on 25L. We acknowledged the traffic and maintained visual contact throughout the approach. Shortly after the traffic call, approach control assigned a 130 heading to intercept the final approach course for 24L. Within 3-5 seconds, I realized that 130 degree would overshoot the course and I increased the bank angle to slightly more than 30 degree and continued the turn to approximately 300 degree prior to rolling out. During the turn, we drifted south of the 24L centerline behind and to the right of our traffic. The tower advised they had received a conflict alert and we stated we had the traffic in sight.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR WDB ON APCH AT LAX DRIFTS PAST APCH COURSE, HAS MINOR CONFLICT WITH ANOTHER ACR ACFT.
Narrative: AFTER PASSING THE SANTA MONICA VOR, WE WERE ASSIGNED A 070 HDG AND GIVEN FURTHER DSCNT. APPROX 5 MI E OF SMO, APCH CTL CALLED AN ACR MLG Y AS TFC IN OUR 1 O'CLOCK POS TO LAND ON 25L. WE ACKNOWLEDGED THE TFC AND MAINTAINED VISUAL CONTACT THROUGHOUT THE APCH. SHORTLY AFTER THE TFC CALL, APCH CTL ASSIGNED A 130 HDG TO INTERCEPT THE FINAL APCH COURSE FOR 24L. WITHIN 3-5 SECONDS, I REALIZED THAT 130 DEG WOULD OVERSHOOT THE COURSE AND I INCREASED THE BANK ANGLE TO SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 30 DEG AND CONTINUED THE TURN TO APPROX 300 DEG PRIOR TO ROLLING OUT. DURING THE TURN, WE DRIFTED S OF THE 24L CTRLINE BEHIND AND TO THE R OF OUR TFC. THE TWR ADVISED THEY HAD RECEIVED A CONFLICT ALERT AND WE STATED WE HAD THE TFC IN SIGHT.
