Narrative:
PF was on board to get current in the aircraft. During taxi for takeoff in hdn, PF was to monitor unicom and PNF was getting IFR clearance. Holding short of runway, waiting for back taxi to runway 10 (current runway in use). PNF received the clearance from denver center, PF instructed me to advise unicom of our back taxi to 10. I did so and then heard a garbled transmission about 28 at hayden. I asked PF who it was and he replied that he hadn't heard anybody in the area. He continued the taxi and made the turn on the runway for the back taxi approximately 5 seconds later we heard an aircraft state he was on short final 28 at hayden and was going around. I asked PF where he came from and PF wasn't sure. He had monitored but rptedly didn't hear anyone. We then saw an light transport aircraft on a left downwind for 10. We made the turn and departed ahead of him on 10. I also told the crew that we had not heard them, did not see them, and that 10 was the active runway. From now on when one of the crew is on another frequency and returns to unicom or a CTAF, we'll take an extra few mins so both PF and PNF can verify to each other on status of traffic, whether on the active runway or any other runway!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMT ACFT FLC TAXIED ONTO, AND DOWN, AN UNCTLED SINGLE RWY FOR THE PURPOSE OF TAXIING TO ONE END FOR TKOF WHEN ANOTHER ACFT WAS ON FINAL FOR THE OTHER END OF THE SINGLE RWY. THERE WERE NO ACCESS PARALLEL TAXIWAYS.
Narrative: PF WAS ON BOARD TO GET CURRENT IN THE ACFT. DURING TAXI FOR TKOF IN HDN, PF WAS TO MONITOR UNICOM AND PNF WAS GETTING IFR CLRNC. HOLDING SHORT OF RWY, WAITING FOR BACK TAXI TO RWY 10 (CURRENT RWY IN USE). PNF RECEIVED THE CLRNC FROM DENVER CTR, PF INSTRUCTED ME TO ADVISE UNICOM OF OUR BACK TAXI TO 10. I DID SO AND THEN HEARD A GARBLED XMISSION ABOUT 28 AT HAYDEN. I ASKED PF WHO IT WAS AND HE REPLIED THAT HE HADN'T HEARD ANYBODY IN THE AREA. HE CONTINUED THE TAXI AND MADE THE TURN ON THE RWY FOR THE BACK TAXI APPROX 5 SECONDS LATER WE HEARD AN ACFT STATE HE WAS ON SHORT FINAL 28 AT HAYDEN AND WAS GOING AROUND. I ASKED PF WHERE HE CAME FROM AND PF WASN'T SURE. HE HAD MONITORED BUT RPTEDLY DIDN'T HEAR ANYONE. WE THEN SAW AN LTT ACFT ON A L DOWNWIND FOR 10. WE MADE THE TURN AND DEPARTED AHEAD OF HIM ON 10. I ALSO TOLD THE CREW THAT WE HAD NOT HEARD THEM, DID NOT SEE THEM, AND THAT 10 WAS THE ACTIVE RWY. FROM NOW ON WHEN ONE OF THE CREW IS ON ANOTHER FREQ AND RETURNS TO UNICOM OR A CTAF, WE'LL TAKE AN EXTRA FEW MINS SO BOTH PF AND PNF CAN VERIFY TO EACH OTHER ON STATUS OF TFC, WHETHER ON THE ACTIVE RWY OR ANY OTHER RWY!
