Narrative:

Airplane had a thorough preflight 5 hours prior to departure as well as a preflight before takeoff minus visual check of fuel. 5 hours prior, myself (pilot) as well as another pilot, verified tanks were topped 48 gallons over 5 hours of fuel. 3:40 hours into flight, engine quit. Problem realized when left tank only ran 1:30 mins then was out -- as well caught VFR on top of IFR 200 ft fog 1300 ft of clouds. Headed to tallahassee, fl, for a radar assist approach. 10 mi south, engine out of fuel, descended through clouds and made a safe landing on dirt road in trees. Were able to refuel and taxi to a clear area and depart safely. Problem: fuel stolen while airplane was unattended. Prevention: visual check of fuel prior to start up.
