Narrative:
Our flight had been cleared to 800 ft MSL. Descending through 10000 MSL, approaching 9700 ft MSL, ZOA called traffic approximately 12 oþclock less than a mi at 9500 ft and told us to maintain 10000 ft. Our TCASII showed a TA 200 ft below (level flight). Immediately a RA appeared with us climbing and leveling at 10330 ft MSL and then descending back to the assigned 10000 ft (the RA was followed to 10300 ft). Never visually saw traffic and flight continued to sjc international airport uneventfully. The problem arose because the aircraft was crossing the localizer (isjc). The air traffic controller did a good job of alerting us as soon as he was able. TCASII did a good job of providing the correct RA.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: TCASII AND ATC ALERTED ON ACR MLG OF AN IMPENDING CONFLICT. THE ACR CLBED TO RESOLVE THE TCASII ALERT, THEN RESUMED ITS CLRNC.
Narrative: OUR FLT HAD BEEN CLRED TO 800 FT MSL. DSNDING THROUGH 10000 MSL, APCHING 9700 FT MSL, ZOA CALLED TFC APPROX 12 OþCLOCK LESS THAN A MI AT 9500 FT AND TOLD US TO MAINTAIN 10000 FT. OUR TCASII SHOWED A TA 200 FT BELOW (LEVEL FLT). IMMEDIATELY A RA APPEARED WITH US CLBING AND LEVELING AT 10330 FT MSL AND THEN DSNDING BACK TO THE ASSIGNED 10000 FT (THE RA WAS FOLLOWED TO 10300 FT). NEVER VISUALLY SAW TFC AND FLT CONTINUED TO SJC INTL ARPT UNEVENTFULLY. THE PROBLEM AROSE BECAUSE THE ACFT WAS XING THE LOC (ISJC). THE AIR TFC CTLR DID A GOOD JOB OF ALERTING US AS SOON AS HE WAS ABLE. TCASII DID A GOOD JOB OF PROVIDING THE CORRECT RA.
