Narrative:
VFR flight from san diego (myf) to burbank (bur). I was proceeding northwest along V23-165 inbound to seal beach VOR (sli). I was receiving flight following throughout trip. Upon nearing seal beach VOR I was expecting a TCA clearance on V459 to bur area. Controller informed me that it would not be possible to get that clearance. I then attempted to get a handoff clearance to/for the next airspace segment. After multiple attempts I proceeded to what I thought was VFR corridor and proceeded to burbank. My current TCA chart does not show actual sfra on actual navigation portion. A more complete preflight would have prevented extra confusion. An additional line with smo radial of 132 ft would also help significantly. I think it may also help if a small inset map was on chart close to TCA area. Some pilots may only open chart to navigation portions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN SMA PLT FLEW THROUGH THE LAX TCA WITHOUT PROPER CLRNC. HE WAS UNDER 'FLT FOLLOWING' WITH LAX CTR OR TRACON.
Narrative: VFR FLT FROM SAN DIEGO (MYF) TO BURBANK (BUR). I WAS PROCEEDING NW ALONG V23-165 INBOUND TO SEAL BEACH VOR (SLI). I WAS RECEIVING FLT FOLLOWING THROUGHOUT TRIP. UPON NEARING SEAL BEACH VOR I WAS EXPECTING A TCA CLRNC ON V459 TO BUR AREA. CTLR INFORMED ME THAT IT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE TO GET THAT CLRNC. I THEN ATTEMPTED TO GET A HDOF CLRNC TO/FOR THE NEXT AIRSPACE SEGMENT. AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS I PROCEEDED TO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS VFR CORRIDOR AND PROCEEDED TO BURBANK. MY CURRENT TCA CHART DOES NOT SHOW ACTUAL SFRA ON ACTUAL NAV PORTION. A MORE COMPLETE PREFLT WOULD HAVE PREVENTED EXTRA CONFUSION. AN ADDITIONAL LINE WITH SMO RADIAL OF 132 FT WOULD ALSO HELP SIGNIFICANTLY. I THINK IT MAY ALSO HELP IF A SMALL INSET MAP WAS ON CHART CLOSE TO TCA AREA. SOME PLTS MAY ONLY OPEN CHART TO NAV PORTIONS.
