Narrative:

Training flight instructor student lesson objective normal lndgs (second time in pattern). Spi (14 hours total time) mgt, preflight discussion, relevant flight information obtained, preflight inspection. Checklist for start up, taxi, run ups cleared for takeoff left traffic on runway 35. First pattern, I demonstrated takeoff, pattern and landing. Second and third spi flts ok. He is over controling, flaring too high. Fourth I demonstrated low pass -- to help in height evaluation, 'looking ahead' and aircraft control. Fifth spi satisfactorily completes low pass. Sixth pattern we decided on 2 more touch goes then call it a day. Spi flys the pattern well and is cleared for touch and go. Good approach -- on final, 75 mph 20 degree flap, correcting for a 10 KT crosswind from 070 with a gentle sideslip. He is 'talking' (centerline, 75 as taught to help him relax), aiming for 1000 ft marker. Spi is slightly low and flares to late with a sharp pull up. This results in a 'bounced landing,' spi's first. Instead of going around spi has frozen unsure of what's happening just waiting. He still has the controls but the wind correction has not been held in place. The plane begins to 'wxvane' to the right and I now reach out to take over the controls. I say 'my plane' (I don't know if he hears me). I apply full power for a go around. However, spi, simultaneously applies full left rudder and holds it in all the way (he later said he thought it was going right). Obviously the plane instantly yaws and starts to roll to the left (rudder - P - factor) doing so is also unwittingly pulling back on the yoke. I am unable to take command as spi has 'locked solid' on the controls. As I am telling spi 'my plane, let go, get off.' the plane is now facing the tower. Just 5 KTS above the stall, full power and in a 60 degree or more bank. We are approximately 10-15 ft in the air. Fortunately at this point, spi lets go and the nose starts to drop. I immediately start to level the wings and pull power as we do not have the altitude to get the nose up again. Despite my efforts we touch down on the grass between the runway and the taxiway. The nose wheel hits first and collapses. We come to an immediate stop as the propeller digs in the ground. The left wing also hits the ground as I had not had the time or altitude to get the wings level. I shut everything down, check on spi (no injuries) so we exit the airplane on our own sides.

Title: INSTR WITH SPI PRACTICING TOUCH AND GO LNDGS BOUNCES LNDG. LOSS OF ACFT CTL. NOSE GEAR COLLAPSES.

Narrative: TRAINING FLT INSTRUCTOR STUDENT LESSON OBJECTIVE NORMAL LNDGS (SECOND TIME IN PATTERN). SPI (14 HRS TOTAL TIME) MGT, PREFLT DISCUSSION, RELEVANT FLT INFO OBTAINED, PREFLT INSPECTION. CHKLIST FOR START UP, TAXI, RUN UPS CLRED FOR TKOF L TFC ON RWY 35. FIRST PATTERN, I DEMONSTRATED TKOF, PATTERN AND LNDG. SECOND AND THIRD SPI FLTS OK. HE IS OVER CTLING, FLARING TOO HIGH. FOURTH I DEMONSTRATED LOW PASS -- TO HELP IN HEIGHT EVALUATION, 'LOOKING AHEAD' AND ACFT CTL. FIFTH SPI SATISFACTORILY COMPLETES LOW PASS. SIXTH PATTERN WE DECIDED ON 2 MORE TOUCH GOES THEN CALL IT A DAY. SPI FLYS THE PATTERN WELL AND IS CLRED FOR TOUCH AND GO. GOOD APCH -- ON FINAL, 75 MPH 20 DEG FLAP, CORRECTING FOR A 10 KT XWIND FROM 070 WITH A GENTLE SIDESLIP. HE IS 'TALKING' (CTRLINE, 75 AS TAUGHT TO HELP HIM RELAX), AIMING FOR 1000 FT MARKER. SPI IS SLIGHTLY LOW AND FLARES TO LATE WITH A SHARP PULL UP. THIS RESULTS IN A 'BOUNCED LNDG,' SPI'S FIRST. INSTEAD OF GOING AROUND SPI HAS FROZEN UNSURE OF WHAT'S HAPPENING JUST WAITING. HE STILL HAS THE CTLS BUT THE WIND CORRECTION HAS NOT BEEN HELD IN PLACE. THE PLANE BEGINS TO 'WXVANE' TO THE R AND I NOW REACH OUT TO TAKE OVER THE CTLS. I SAY 'MY PLANE' (I DON'T KNOW IF HE HEARS ME). I APPLY FULL PWR FOR A GAR. HOWEVER, SPI, SIMULTANEOUSLY APPLIES FULL L RUDDER AND HOLDS IT IN ALL THE WAY (HE LATER SAID HE THOUGHT IT WAS GOING R). OBVIOUSLY THE PLANE INSTANTLY YAWS AND STARTS TO ROLL TO THE L (RUDDER - P - FACTOR) DOING SO IS ALSO UNWITTINGLY PULLING BACK ON THE YOKE. I AM UNABLE TO TAKE COMMAND AS SPI HAS 'LOCKED SOLID' ON THE CTLS. AS I AM TELLING SPI 'MY PLANE, LET GO, GET OFF.' THE PLANE IS NOW FACING THE TWR. JUST 5 KTS ABOVE THE STALL, FULL PWR AND IN A 60 DEG OR MORE BANK. WE ARE APPROX 10-15 FT IN THE AIR. FORTUNATELY AT THIS POINT, SPI LETS GO AND THE NOSE STARTS TO DROP. I IMMEDIATELY START TO LEVEL THE WINGS AND PULL PWR AS WE DO NOT HAVE THE ALT TO GET THE NOSE UP AGAIN. DESPITE MY EFFORTS WE TOUCH DOWN ON THE GRASS BTWN THE RWY AND THE TAXIWAY. THE NOSE WHEEL HITS FIRST AND COLLAPSES. WE COME TO AN IMMEDIATE STOP AS THE PROP DIGS IN THE GND. THE L WING ALSO HITS THE GND AS I HAD NOT HAD THE TIME OR ALT TO GET THE WINGS LEVEL. I SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN, CHK ON SPI (NO INJURIES) SO WE EXIT THE AIRPLANE ON OUR OWN SIDES.
