Narrative:
I was following instructions being given to me by ATC when I was told to follow an light transport at 1 O'clock. I saw an airplane at 1 O'clock and started to follow that aircraft to the airport as instructed. As that airplane descended and passed in front of me on his way into the airport for landing, I turned my base leg, and then finally, I turned my final to follow for landing. As I did that, controller said 'nice job keeping close' change frequency to XXXX? I believe it was tower frequency. I then heard the controller telling me I had cut off the light transport and had me turning to avoid any problems. I never saw this airplane. The plane I was following was, and made contact visually was the wrong plane. I did not know what the light transport really was, I assumed I had the right plane. Don't take a visual unless you're 100 percent sure of what you're looking at. Also that same day descending I was given a clearance out of 15000 ft to cross 10 mi south fairfield VOR at 12 mi at 10000 ft. This was not a good day at the salt lake city area.

Title: NON ADHERENCE TO ATC CLRNC INSTRUCTION CREATES AN ALTDEV AND LATER, A POTENTIAL CONFLICT LTSS.
Narrative: I WAS FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS BEING GIVEN TO ME BY ATC WHEN I WAS TOLD TO FOLLOW AN LTT AT 1 O'CLOCK. I SAW AN AIRPLANE AT 1 O'CLOCK AND STARTED TO FOLLOW THAT ACFT TO THE ARPT AS INSTRUCTED. AS THAT AIRPLANE DSNDED AND PASSED IN FRONT OF ME ON HIS WAY INTO THE ARPT FOR LNDG, I TURNED MY BASE LEG, AND THEN FINALLY, I TURNED MY FINAL TO FOLLOW FOR LNDG. AS I DID THAT, CTLR SAID 'NICE JOB KEEPING CLOSE' CHANGE FREQ TO XXXX? I BELIEVE IT WAS TWR FREQ. I THEN HEARD THE CTLR TELLING ME I HAD CUT OFF THE LTT AND HAD ME TURNING TO AVOID ANY PROBLEMS. I NEVER SAW THIS AIRPLANE. THE PLANE I WAS FOLLOWING WAS, AND MADE CONTACT VISUALLY WAS THE WRONG PLANE. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT THE LTT REALLY WAS, I ASSUMED I HAD THE RIGHT PLANE. DON'T TAKE A VISUAL UNLESS YOU'RE 100 PERCENT SURE OF WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT. ALSO THAT SAME DAY DSNDING I WAS GIVEN A CLRNC OUT OF 15000 FT TO CROSS 10 MI S FAIRFIELD VOR AT 12 MI AT 10000 FT. THIS WAS NOT A GOOD DAY AT THE SALT LAKE CITY AREA.
