Narrative:
While en route from sdf to abq; approximately 80 mi south of liberal, ks, we experienced severe turbulence and heavy rain. Our WX radar became intermittent and at the same time the radios began to fade. We asked ZKC for a radar vector out of the WX, however they were unable to receive us. During this time the turbulence became so severe that the airspeed dropped from 270 KIAS to 180 KIAS. It then became evident that we had to sacrifice altitude for airspeed in order to maintain aircraft control. The altitude momentarily went from assigned FL390 to 37500 ft. Eventually the turbulence subsided and we were able to maintain FL390. We soon established radio contact with ZKC and were able to resume normal operations.

Title: LGT ENCOUNTERS SEVERE TURB AND HVY RAIN, RADIOS FADE AND RADAR INTERMITTENT. CTLR UNABLE TO HEAR REQUEST FOR VECTOR OUT OF WX. AIRSPD DROPS, MUST SACRIFICE ALT FOR SPD.
