Narrative:
We had just been handed off from TRACON to ZNY. Center gave us clearance to climb from 17000 to FL200. First officer acknowledged the clearance and set FL220 in our altitude alerter. As the PF, I was studying the navigation chart for our route of flight. Consequently, I heard the call but did not focus on it. I saw FL220 in the altitude alerter and continued the climb to FL220. A few moments later, center told us to expect higher altitude after passing conflicting traffic opposite our direction. First officer idented traffic at 2 O'clock position and passing off our right side and behind us. He questioned ATC about his altitude. We were approximately 20400 at the time. ATC informed us that we had been cleared to FL200. First officer stated that we had FL220 in our altitude alerter. Center then told us to continue climb to FL240 as we were past the traffic. The industry needs a system where we can have clrncs received by the printed word as through ACARS with clearance verification also made through ACARS.

Title: THE FO ON AN ACR MLG SET HIS ALT REMINDER TO FL220 VICE 200. THERE WAS A TFC CONFLICT WITH TFC AT FL210.
Narrative: WE HAD JUST BEEN HANDED OFF FROM TRACON TO ZNY. CTR GAVE US CLRNC TO CLB FROM 17000 TO FL200. FO ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC AND SET FL220 IN OUR ALT ALERTER. AS THE PF, I WAS STUDYING THE NAV CHART FOR OUR RTE OF FLT. CONSEQUENTLY, I HEARD THE CALL BUT DID NOT FOCUS ON IT. I SAW FL220 IN THE ALT ALERTER AND CONTINUED THE CLB TO FL220. A FEW MOMENTS LATER, CTR TOLD US TO EXPECT HIGHER ALT AFTER PASSING CONFLICTING TFC OPPOSITE OUR DIRECTION. FO IDENTED TFC AT 2 O'CLOCK POS AND PASSING OFF OUR R SIDE AND BEHIND US. HE QUESTIONED ATC ABOUT HIS ALT. WE WERE APPROX 20400 AT THE TIME. ATC INFORMED US THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO FL200. FO STATED THAT WE HAD FL220 IN OUR ALT ALERTER. CTR THEN TOLD US TO CONTINUE CLB TO FL240 AS WE WERE PAST THE TFC. THE INDUSTRY NEEDS A SYS WHERE WE CAN HAVE CLRNCS RECEIVED BY THE PRINTED WORD AS THROUGH ACARS WITH CLRNC VERIFICATION ALSO MADE THROUGH ACARS.
