Narrative:
Enclosed is a letter I sent to a flight manager at our airline. The strike is still with us and the company, the union and the FAA are not willing to do anything about it. Maybe a prod from you will help. The situation is critical and we could have an accident because of this. On jun/xa/92 I got to dispatch about XA00 to check in for my trip to sydney. The first officer said one of the coplts had the papers. I went over to a person looking at the papers and asked this man if he was going to sydney, and he said yes, so I told him that I was first officer B and put my hand out to shake his. He said 'first officer a' and continued to look at the papers. He seemed very angry and did not offer his hand or get up to greet me. After about 15 seconds it became apparent he was angry with me, although I had never met nor heard of him. I then took the flight plan and tore off a copy so I could review it and gave the others back to him. He gave me a dirty look but said nothing to me. After a while the captain came in and we looked at the papers and then went out to the aircraft. First officer a did not say 1 word to me the rest of the trip. On jul/xb/92 I flew the same trip and first officer a was the flying copilot again. I was not sure I had 'read' him correctly or not so I went up to him again and put my hand out to shake his hand and said 'hi, I'm first officer B' and he said 'I know who you are, and I'm very particular who I shake hands with.' I laughed at him and he asked if I was laughing at him and I said yes, and he asked why and I said because of his rudeness. I then called the duty officer at exo and told him I was considering getting off the trip and he said if it was unsafe I should not go. I made the decision to continue. On jul/xc/92 I returned to lax from sydney as the relief pilot. X was the captain and first officer a was the flying first officer. First officer a did not speak to me all the way back to los angeles until just before touchdown. At about 10000 ft I said to the other relief pilot, who was sitting in the middle seat, that I thought first officer a had his MDA set wrong at 300 ft, the decision height for 25L at lax is 301 ft and I thought that 310 ft should be set. First officer told first officer a his MDA should be set at 310 ft but got no response. First officer a ignored him or did not hear him. At about the OM I said to first officer a 'do you have your MDA set where you want it?' he said in a very angry manner, 'what is wrong now?' I said that I believed his MDA should be set at 310 ft and he replied that his MDA was set where he wanted it! At that time the captain set his MDA at 300 ft and we went ahead and landed. When we got to the gate, first officer a said to me in a very nice manner, 'now what was wrong with the MDA on that approach?' and I explained what I thought should have been set. He turned to captain and said, 'well now I'm getting a line check from him' and a few other sarcastic remarks I don't remember. So I packed up by bags and left. As I was leaving the cockpit first officer a said that I should have told him earlier about the MDA. I believe he was looking for an argument and was not about to give him one. There was no communication in that cockpit and both the captain and first officer were trying to shut me off from the flow of information from me to them. I hope this makes it clear as to why I will not fly with first officer a unless this matter is cleared up.

MAYBE A PROD FROM YOU WILL HELP. THE SITUATION IS CRITICAL AND WE COULD HAVE AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS. ON JUN/XA/92 I GOT TO DISPATCH ABOUT XA00 TO CHK IN FOR MY TRIP TO SYDNEY. THE FO SAID ONE OF THE COPLTS HAD THE PAPERS. I WENT OVER TO A PERSON LOOKING AT THE PAPERS AND ASKED THIS MAN IF HE WAS GOING TO SYDNEY, AND HE SAID YES, SO I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS FO B AND PUT MY HAND OUT TO SHAKE HIS. HE SAID 'FO A' AND CONTINUED TO LOOK AT THE PAPERS. HE SEEMED VERY ANGRY AND DID NOT OFFER HIS HAND OR GET UP TO GREET ME. ON JUL/XB/92 I FLEW THE SAME TRIP AND FO A WAS THE FLYING COPLT AGAIN. I WAS NOT SURE I HAD 'READ' HIM CORRECTLY OR NOT SO I WENT UP TO HIM AGAIN AND PUT MY HAND OUT TO SHAKE HIS HAND AND SAID 'HI, I'M FO B' AND HE SAID 'I KNOW WHO YOU ARE, AND I'M VERY PARTICULAR WHO I SHAKE HANDS WITH.' I LAUGHED AT HIM AND HE ASKED IF I WAS LAUGHING AT HIM AND I SAID YES, AND HE ASKED WHY AND I SAID BECAUSE OF HIS RUDENESS. I THEN CALLED THE DUTY OFFICER AT EXO AND TOLD HIM I WAS CONSIDERING GETTING OFF THE TRIP AND HE SAID IF IT WAS UNSAFE I SHOULD NOT GO. I MADE THE DECISION TO CONTINUE. ON JUL/XC/92 I RETURNED TO LAX FROM SYDNEY AS THE RELIEF PLT. X WAS THE CAPT AND FO A WAS THE FLYING FO. FO A DID NOT SPEAK TO ME ALL THE WAY BACK TO LOS ANGELES UNTIL JUST BEFORE TOUCHDOWN. HE SAID IN A VERY ANGRY MANNER, 'WHAT IS WRONG NOW?' I SAID THAT I BELIEVED HIS MDA SHOULD BE SET AT 310 FT AND HE REPLIED THAT HIS MDA WAS SET WHERE HE WANTED IT! AT THAT TIME THE CAPT SET HIS MDA AT 300 FT AND WE WENT AHEAD AND LANDED. WHEN WE GOT TO THE GATE, FO A SAID TO ME IN A VERY NICE MANNER, 'NOW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE MDA ON THAT APCH?' AND I EXPLAINED WHAT I THOUGHT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SET. HE TURNED TO CAPT AND SAID, 'WELL NOW I'M GETTING A LINE CHK FROM HIM' AND A FEW OTHER SARCASTIC REMARKS I DON'T REMEMBER. SO I PACKED UP BY BAGS AND LEFT. AS I WAS LEAVING THE COCKPIT FO A SAID THAT I SHOULD HAVE TOLD HIM EARLIER ABOUT THE MDA. I BELIEVE HE WAS LOOKING FOR AN ARGUMENT AND WAS NOT ABOUT TO GIVE HIM ONE. THERE WAS NO COM IN THAT COCKPIT AND BOTH THE CAPT AND FO WERE TRYING TO SHUT ME OFF FROM THE FLOW OF INFO FROM ME TO THEM. I HOPE THIS MAKES IT CLR AS TO WHY I WILL NOT FLY WITH FO A UNLESS THIS MATTER IS CLRED UP.
