Narrative:
Ground's instructions were to 'taxi to runway 15 via alpha; hold short of 15 at charlie.' we began our taxi from the area south and west of the intersection of runways 15 and 8 at kbur. I got the feeling that the captain was going to continue across runway 15 despite ground's instructions to 'hold short of 15 at charlie.' about the time I looked over at the captain to determine whether or not he was aware of what he was about to do we heard a plaintive cry from ground, 'north X, hold short of 15.' we came to a stop nearly completely on the runway side of the hold line; we continued past it some 30 ft. As we came to a stop I looked left to see an medium large transport rotating on his takeoff roll from runway 15. We would have found ourselves on the runway at the same time that the medium large transport was passing over or through us. Please note that, I was prepared to brake the aircraft if conditions required. Contributing factors: the captain is known for his hastiness in getting underway. He was buckling his lap belt approaching the hold line at charlie and runway 15. One cannot effectively or easily steer this particular aircraft on the ground with one's feet; it has a 'tiller' for ground steering requiring the use of the left hand. No further words were exchanged following this incident, either between ground control and our aircraft or between the 2 crewmembers. As well as I know him and his flying habits I know what the captain's response would have been had I asked him: ' I thought he said taxi to 15.' (he did say that; but that ain't all he said). But more probably and worse yet: 'we stopped, didn't we?' he's got a point there, but not much of one.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN LTT ALMOST HAD A RWY INCURSION IN FRONT OF AN LGT TAKING OFF. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CLOSE HAD THE LTT CONTINUED.
Narrative: GND'S INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO 'TAXI TO RWY 15 VIA ALPHA; HOLD SHORT OF 15 AT CHARLIE.' WE BEGAN OUR TAXI FROM THE AREA S AND W OF THE INTXN OF RWYS 15 AND 8 AT KBUR. I GOT THE FEELING THAT THE CAPT WAS GOING TO CONTINUE ACROSS RWY 15 DESPITE GND'S INSTRUCTIONS TO 'HOLD SHORT OF 15 AT CHARLIE.' ABOUT THE TIME I LOOKED OVER AT THE CAPT TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT HE WAS AWARE OF WHAT HE WAS ABOUT TO DO WE HEARD A PLAINTIVE CRY FROM GND, 'N X, HOLD SHORT OF 15.' WE CAME TO A STOP NEARLY COMPLETELY ON THE RWY SIDE OF THE HOLD LINE; WE CONTINUED PAST IT SOME 30 FT. AS WE CAME TO A STOP I LOOKED L TO SEE AN MLG ROTATING ON HIS TKOF ROLL FROM RWY 15. WE WOULD HAVE FOUND OURSELVES ON THE RWY AT THE SAME TIME THAT THE MLG WAS PASSING OVER OR THROUGH US. PLEASE NOTE THAT, I WAS PREPARED TO BRAKE THE ACFT IF CONDITIONS REQUIRED. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: THE CAPT IS KNOWN FOR HIS HASTINESS IN GETTING UNDERWAY. HE WAS BUCKLING HIS LAP BELT APCHING THE HOLD LINE AT CHARLIE AND RWY 15. ONE CANNOT EFFECTIVELY OR EASILY STEER THIS PARTICULAR ACFT ON THE GND WITH ONE'S FEET; IT HAS A 'TILLER' FOR GND STEERING REQUIRING THE USE OF THE L HAND. NO FURTHER WORDS WERE EXCHANGED FOLLOWING THIS INCIDENT, EITHER BTWN GND CTL AND OUR ACFT OR BTWN THE 2 CREWMEMBERS. AS WELL AS I KNOW HIM AND HIS FLYING HABITS I KNOW WHAT THE CAPT'S RESPONSE WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD I ASKED HIM: ' I THOUGHT HE SAID TAXI TO 15.' (HE DID SAY THAT; BUT THAT AIN'T ALL HE SAID). BUT MORE PROBABLY AND WORSE YET: 'WE STOPPED, DIDN'T WE?' HE'S GOT A POINT THERE, BUT NOT MUCH OF ONE.
