Narrative:
I was flying aircraft and climbing to FL200, captain switched to company radio to call back to ewr company to give departure times. During this switching, we believe the ATC radio was switched back to departure control. When captain returned to ATC radio, he called them to ask for a higher altitude, as I had leveled at FL200. We then were informed we were on departure frequency so we switched back to ZNY. They said they had been trying to call us and we were cleared to FL390. The radios on this aircraft are very easy to mess up and change the frequency of radio #1 (ATC) when you meant to change them on radio #2 (company). The captain is new on this aircraft and that sometimes adds to it until you learn to be very careful with the radios on this aircraft. Supplemental information from acn 220149: cause is my unfamiliarity with these radio dials, switches -- which are very complicated. It's an oft-told joke that the radio is the most complicated unit on the medium large transport. We weren't off the frequency more than 4 mins.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LOW TIME IN MODEL MLG CAPT SWITCHED OFF ATC RADIO, INADVERTENTLY, WHILE INITIATING A CALL TO HIS COMPANY.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING ACFT AND CLBING TO FL200, CAPT SWITCHED TO COMPANY RADIO TO CALL BACK TO EWR COMPANY TO GIVE DEP TIMES. DURING THIS SWITCHING, WE BELIEVE THE ATC RADIO WAS SWITCHED BACK TO DEP CTL. WHEN CAPT RETURNED TO ATC RADIO, HE CALLED THEM TO ASK FOR A HIGHER ALT, AS I HAD LEVELED AT FL200. WE THEN WERE INFORMED WE WERE ON DEP FREQ SO WE SWITCHED BACK TO ZNY. THEY SAID THEY HAD BEEN TRYING TO CALL US AND WE WERE CLRED TO FL390. THE RADIOS ON THIS ACFT ARE VERY EASY TO MESS UP AND CHANGE THE FREQ OF RADIO #1 (ATC) WHEN YOU MEANT TO CHANGE THEM ON RADIO #2 (COMPANY). THE CAPT IS NEW ON THIS ACFT AND THAT SOMETIMES ADDS TO IT UNTIL YOU LEARN TO BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE RADIOS ON THIS ACFT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 220149: CAUSE IS MY UNFAMILIARITY WITH THESE RADIO DIALS, SWITCHES -- WHICH ARE VERY COMPLICATED. IT'S AN OFT-TOLD JOKE THAT THE RADIO IS THE MOST COMPLICATED UNIT ON THE MLG. WE WEREN'T OFF THE FREQ MORE THAN 4 MINS.
