Narrative:

In cruise at 5000 ft from lyh to roa GPWS gave a loud warning to climb due to terrain. Initially we climbed to 5800 ft then descended to 5000 ft, then again climbed to 5800 ft a few mi later due to a second GPWS warning. ATC was advised throughout the warning. ATC stated that they were aware that GPWS is tripped on this segment for aircraft with GPWS and said that we caused no problem. If ATC is aware that aircraft with GPWS exist why do they issue rtes that usually trip this warning.
