Narrative:

Just level at cruise altitude and cleared direct lgc at 13000. Left engine developed coolant leak. Performed precautionary shut down of engine. Lost 400 ft altitude during process. Turned back to airport (81J) at destin, fl, and called ZJX. Advised of engine problem and requested lower altitude with returns to 81J. Center promptly cleared me to 7000 ft and return to base. Center then passed me to elgin AFB approach control. Eglin cleared me to 6000 ft and asked if I was declaring an emergency. I replied negative and proceeded to destin airport without further incident under control of eglin approach. 2 mistakes: lost 400 ft during engine shutdown and turned back to airport prior to receiving clearance from ZJX. Under circumstances of unknown condition of left engine, the mistakes were honest and reflect only human reaction. I did everything as rapidly as possible, considering safety. I could have, however, precluded the altitude loss with proper cockpit technique.

Title: AN SMT TWIN PLT HAD AN ENG FAILURE. HE LOST SOME ALT AND HDG CTL WHILE SHUTTING DOWN THE ENG. HE DID NOT DECLARE AN EMER.

Narrative: JUST LEVEL AT CRUISE ALT AND CLRED DIRECT LGC AT 13000. LEFT ENG DEVELOPED COOLANT LEAK. PERFORMED PRECAUTIONARY SHUT DOWN OF ENG. LOST 400 FT ALT DURING PROCESS. TURNED BACK TO ARPT (81J) AT DESTIN, FL, AND CALLED ZJX. ADVISED OF ENG PROBLEM AND REQUESTED LOWER ALT WITH RETURNS TO 81J. CTR PROMPTLY CLRED ME TO 7000 FT AND RETURN TO BASE. CTR THEN PASSED ME TO ELGIN AFB APCH CTL. EGLIN CLRED ME TO 6000 FT AND ASKED IF I WAS DECLARING AN EMER. I REPLIED NEGATIVE AND PROCEEDED TO DESTIN ARPT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT UNDER CTL OF EGLIN APCH. 2 MISTAKES: LOST 400 FT DURING ENG SHUTDOWN AND TURNED BACK TO ARPT PRIOR TO RECEIVING CLRNC FROM ZJX. UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES OF UNKNOWN CONDITION OF L ENG, THE MISTAKES WERE HONEST AND REFLECT ONLY HUMAN REACTION. I DID EVERYTHING AS RAPIDLY AS POSSIBLE, CONSIDERING SAFETY. I COULD HAVE, HOWEVER, PRECLUDED THE ALT LOSS WITH PROPER COCKPIT TECHNIQUE.
