Narrative:
Cleared to civet intersection, then cleared reeds 2 arrival lax. Crossed civet at 14000. Baset next intersection. ATC requested speed of 300 KTS and no slow. Asked about cross altitude of 10000 and speed. Speed 300 KTS and altitude 10000 is what we were led to believe. Then asked what our altitude was, reply 12000. Told to level off. Said we had not been cleared to 10000 ft. Approach was continued. No aircraft or incident in approach. Speeds were told to maintain higher than normal. 5 mi west of airport, asked if 7R was in sight. Impossible -- behind us. Turn back to airport and 60 degrees to runway. Cleared for approach. Altitudes and procedures are continually being changed and controllers forget instructions. Normal speed and dscnts are rare in busy times at lax.
