Narrative:
After takeoff from pit, gear was retracted. Abnormal indications on the right main landing gear were observed as follows; right medium large transport unsafe light was on and gear door open light was on. Trouble shot problem in accordance with pilots handbook to no avail. Informed company of problem and continued flight while discussing options in dca area (ie, available runways should gear not come down properly, fuel, etc). Gear was lowered early in approach phase and came down normally, indicating safe. Uneventful landing ensued. Gear problem was noted in aircraft logbook. Supplemental information from acn 224780. A mechanic came to the cockpit upon our arrival at the gate. The aircraft seemed to have excess drag. I did not believe it to be simply a microswitch adjustment. The next day, the chief pilot called and expressed his concern that the FAA might consider our operation reckless for not returning to pit. I most strongly disagree. If the company feels that the checklists are inadequate, they should be changed. Subsequent investigation indicates that the gear door may have sequenced improperly and that the gear may have retracted onto the closed door.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MLG FLEW ONTO DEST WITH AN UNUSUAL LNDG GEAR INDICATION. THE LNDG GEAR OPERATED PROPERLY AT DEST.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM PIT, GEAR WAS RETRACTED. ABNORMAL INDICATIONS ON THE R MAIN LNDG GEAR WERE OBSERVED AS FOLLOWS; R MLG UNSAFE LIGHT WAS ON AND GEAR DOOR OPEN LIGHT WAS ON. TROUBLE SHOT PROBLEM IN ACCORDANCE WITH PLTS HANDBOOK TO NO AVAIL. INFORMED COMPANY OF PROBLEM AND CONTINUED FLT WHILE DISCUSSING OPTIONS IN DCA AREA (IE, AVAILABLE RWYS SHOULD GEAR NOT COME DOWN PROPERLY, FUEL, ETC). GEAR WAS LOWERED EARLY IN APCH PHASE AND CAME DOWN NORMALLY, INDICATING SAFE. UNEVENTFUL LNDG ENSUED. GEAR PROBLEM WAS NOTED IN ACFT LOGBOOK. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 224780. A MECH CAME TO THE COCKPIT UPON OUR ARR AT THE GATE. THE ACFT SEEMED TO HAVE EXCESS DRAG. I DID NOT BELIEVE IT TO BE SIMPLY A MICROSWITCH ADJUSTMENT. THE NEXT DAY, THE CHIEF PLT CALLED AND EXPRESSED HIS CONCERN THAT THE FAA MIGHT CONSIDER OUR OP RECKLESS FOR NOT RETURNING TO PIT. I MOST STRONGLY DISAGREE. IF THE COMPANY FEELS THAT THE CHKLISTS ARE INADEQUATE, THEY SHOULD BE CHANGED. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION INDICATES THAT THE GEAR DOOR MAY HAVE SEQUENCED IMPROPERLY AND THAT THE GEAR MAY HAVE RETRACTED ONTO THE CLOSED DOOR.
