Narrative:
Tower told air carrier X to 'taxi into position and hold onto runway 13L.' first officer reads clearance back. I thought I heard the tower also clear an aircraft to land runway 13L about 10 seconds earlier. I, therefore, asked my first officer. He did say 'into position and hold on runway 13L' did he not. My first officer confirmed this. I asked first officer to confirm with tower, but you cannot get a word in at dfw. It is so busy and frequently go on nonstop at peak times. I taxied real slow and all of a sudden the tower told us to hold short. We did not even have time to read back air carrier X hold short. Tower frequency was saturated again. I hit my brakes. I stopped. We finally got a word in and made a 180 degree to get off runway (we were passed hold short line, but not quite onto runway yet). Seconds later, an light transport lands on our runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X POSSIBLE LTSS FROM LTT LNDG ON OCCUPIED RWY. POSSIBLE SYS ERROR.
Narrative: TWR TOLD ACR X TO 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD ONTO RWY 13L.' FO READS CLRNC BACK. I THOUGHT I HEARD THE TWR ALSO CLR AN ACFT TO LAND RWY 13L ABOUT 10 SECONDS EARLIER. I, THEREFORE, ASKED MY FO. HE DID SAY 'INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 13L' DID HE NOT. MY FO CONFIRMED THIS. I ASKED FO TO CONFIRM WITH TWR, BUT YOU CANNOT GET A WORD IN AT DFW. IT IS SO BUSY AND FREQUENTLY GO ON NONSTOP AT PEAK TIMES. I TAXIED REAL SLOW AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE TWR TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT. WE DID NOT EVEN HAVE TIME TO READ BACK ACR X HOLD SHORT. TWR FREQ WAS SATURATED AGAIN. I HIT MY BRAKES. I STOPPED. WE FINALLY GOT A WORD IN AND MADE A 180 DEG TO GET OFF RWY (WE WERE PASSED HOLD SHORT LINE, BUT NOT QUITE ONTO RWY YET). SECONDS LATER, AN LTT LANDS ON OUR RWY.
