Narrative:
The n-s runway at salina, ks, is 13337 ft long and 200 ft wide, but I mistook it for a taxiway. I was instructed to taxi south to runway 35 and somehow thought that a parallel taxiway (actually the runway) would get me there. The aircraft was about halfway on the runway when I realized my error. Tower realized it at about the same time. They then instructed us to taxi south down the runway and exit the active. No conflict existed. Contributing factors: my first and only time into salina. Same for second in command. We were both excited as second in command had never been to the west coast and I only as a second in command. Slight uphill rise from taxiway to active -- lots of concrete. Should have studied airport diagram closer. Salina was fuel stop. It is scary to think that I did this after almost 20 yrs and 10000 accident-free hours. What if WX had been foggy or aircraft on runway -- remember (aircraft incident). I will go very slow now at all airports and if I have any questions, I will stop and ask!

Title: CAPT OF CPR LTT JET ACFT INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY WHEN IT WAS MISTAKEN FOR A TAXIWAY.

I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI S TO RWY 35 AND SOMEHOW THOUGHT THAT A PARALLEL TAXIWAY (ACTUALLY THE RWY) WOULD GET ME THERE. THE ACFT WAS ABOUT HALFWAY ON THE RWY WHEN I REALIZED MY ERROR. SHOULD HAVE STUDIED ARPT DIAGRAM CLOSER. SALINA WAS FUEL STOP. IT IS SCARY TO THINK THAT I DID THIS AFTER ALMOST 20 YRS AND 10000 ACCIDENT-FREE HRS. WHAT IF WX HAD BEEN FOGGY OR ACFT ON RWY -- REMEMBER (ACFT INCIDENT). I WILL GO VERY SLOW NOW AT ALL ARPTS AND IF I HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, I WILL STOP AND ASK!
