Narrative:
*Father and son were flying together in a newly purchased small aircraft, attempting to fly from dsm to rdu. Both pilots were VFR rated only. In the vicinity of sdf, they ran into WX and were given vectors and an IFR clearance to land at sdf. The rptrs state that they told the first controller that they were VFR rated only. Apparently this word was not passed on to the sdf TRACON, as the TRACON assumed that the rptrs were IFR rated. The TRACON supervisor has stated that he would have to report this to the FSDO. The rptrs believe that there was just a communication error or mixup. The rptrs did not ask for a flight assist or declare an emergency.
