Narrative:
Flight attendant reported an odd odor coming from the forward galley. So was sent back to investigate. As he was standing in the cockpit door discussing the problem with the flight attendant, a cloud of smoke erupted from the galley. The so went back to the galley to take action against the smoke. The first officer and I went on oxygen. We requested immediate diversion to mci and were cleared for descent. Passing 25000 ft, the so reported the smoke was controled, so we continued to slc. The cause of the smoke was tape which had been placed on a tray carrier which holds the meals in the ovens. The tape was evidently used to mark or write on. The flight attendant had pulled the circuit breakers for the ovens on her way to report the problem. This prevented the tape from igniting. It was only scorched. The practice of using tape to mark objects to be used in an oven could cause an aircraft accident or incident.

Title: ACFT AT CRUISE HAS SMOKE IN CABIN. DSND, USE OXYGEN. DISCOVER TAPE ON CARRIER TRAY USED TO HOLD MEALS IN OVEN.
Narrative: FLT ATTENDANT RPTED AN ODD ODOR COMING FROM THE FORWARD GALLEY. SO WAS SENT BACK TO INVESTIGATE. AS HE WAS STANDING IN THE COCKPIT DOOR DISCUSSING THE PROB WITH THE FLT ATTENDANT, A CLOUD OF SMOKE ERUPTED FROM THE GALLEY. THE SO WENT BACK TO THE GALLEY TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST THE SMOKE. THE FO AND I WENT ON OXYGEN. WE REQUESTED IMMEDIATE DIVERSION TO MCI AND WERE CLRED FOR DSCNT. PASSING 25000 FT, THE SO RPTED THE SMOKE WAS CTLED, SO WE CONTINUED TO SLC. THE CAUSE OF THE SMOKE WAS TAPE WHICH HAD BEEN PLACED ON A TRAY CARRIER WHICH HOLDS THE MEALS IN THE OVENS. THE TAPE WAS EVIDENTLY USED TO MARK OR WRITE ON. THE FLT ATTENDANT HAD PULLED THE CIRCUIT BREAKERS FOR THE OVENS ON HER WAY TO RPT THE PROB. THIS PREVENTED THE TAPE FROM IGNITING. IT WAS ONLY SCORCHED. THE PRACTICE OF USING TAPE TO MARK OBJECTS TO BE USED IN AN OVEN COULD CAUSE AN ACFT ACCIDENT OR INCIDENT.
