Narrative:

After takeoff from fra on runway 18 and gear retraction we had several very loud compressor stalls. I saw the EPR on left engine fluctuate and called 'we are losing the left engine'. Power was reduced and the engine stabilized. All indications were normal after that. I declared an emergency and requested vectors to return for landing. We elected not to dump fuel and to make on overweight landing to expedite our getting back on the ground. Our landing weight was 364000 pounds. The copilot was flying and made a smooth, normal landing. After clearing the runway and taxiing some distance to our gate, we terminated the emergency. Approaching our gate area, we noticed increasing temperature indication and notified our ground people to use caution as we had hot brakes. Levels 3 to 4 indicated at this time. As we turned into our parking spot, a flight waiting to taxi reported that we had a brake fire on the right side. An emergency was declared and assistance called for. The emergency equipment was still out and arrived quickly to our localizer. Our ground service people advised us not to evacuate/evacuation passengers, the fire was out and situation was under control. I had advised our faic to deplane the people out the main entrance door, ll. Passenger service requested we hold off until buses were available. We held the passengers on board. The faic was informed of our problem and was kept informed by our relief pilot from the very beginning. We had very good communications between the cockpit and cabin during the entire situation. PA announcements were made to the passengers to keep them informed that a normal landing was being made and that the fire rescue was standing by as a precaution. I allowed the copilot to continue to fly after the compressor stall. He did a very nice job so I saw no reason to take the controls on landing. There were no injuries to passengers or crew.

Title: FLC OF ACR WDB ACFT EXPERIENCED AN ENG FAILURE AFTER LIFTOFF AND RETURNED TO LAND OVERWT RESULTING IN A BRAKE FIRE AFTER LNDG ROLL OUT.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM FRA ON RWY 18 AND GEAR RETRACTION WE HAD SEVERAL VERY LOUD COMPRESSOR STALLS. I SAW THE EPR ON L ENG FLUCTUATE AND CALLED 'WE ARE LOSING THE L ENG'. PWR WAS REDUCED AND THE ENG STABILIZED. ALL INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL AFTER THAT. I DECLARED AN EMER AND REQUESTED VECTORS TO RETURN FOR LNDG. WE ELECTED NOT TO DUMP FUEL AND TO MAKE ON OVERWT LNDG TO EXPEDITE OUR GETTING BACK ON THE GND. OUR LNDG WT WAS 364000 LBS. THE COPLT WAS FLYING AND MADE A SMOOTH, NORMAL LNDG. AFTER CLRING THE RWY AND TAXIING SOME DISTANCE TO OUR GATE, WE TERMINATED THE EMER. APCHING OUR GATE AREA, WE NOTICED INCREASING TEMP INDICATION AND NOTIFIED OUR GND PEOPLE TO USE CAUTION AS WE HAD HOT BRAKES. LEVELS 3 TO 4 INDICATED AT THIS TIME. AS WE TURNED INTO OUR PARKING SPOT, A FLT WAITING TO TAXI RPTED THAT WE HAD A BRAKE FIRE ON THE R SIDE. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND ASSISTANCE CALLED FOR. THE EMER EQUIPMENT WAS STILL OUT AND ARRIVED QUICKLY TO OUR LOC. OUR GND SVC PEOPLE ADVISED US NOT TO EVAC PAXS, THE FIRE WAS OUT AND SIT WAS UNDER CTL. I HAD ADVISED OUR FAIC TO DEPLANE THE PEOPLE OUT THE MAIN ENTRANCE DOOR, lL. PAX SVC REQUESTED WE HOLD OFF UNTIL BUSES WERE AVAILABLE. WE HELD THE PAXS ON BOARD. THE FAIC WAS INFORMED OF OUR PROB AND WAS KEPT INFORMED BY OUR RELIEF PLT FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. WE HAD VERY GOOD COMS BTWN THE COCKPIT AND CABIN DURING THE ENTIRE SIT. PA ANNOUNCEMENTS WERE MADE TO THE PAXS TO KEEP THEM INFORMED THAT A NORMAL LNDG WAS BEING MADE AND THAT THE FIRE RESCUE WAS STANDING BY AS A PRECAUTION. I ALLOWED THE COPLT TO CONTINUE TO FLY AFTER THE COMPRESSOR STALL. HE DID A VERY NICE JOB SO I SAW NO REASON TO TAKE THE CTLS ON LNDG. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO PAXS OR CREW.
