Narrative:
Reported at moriches inlet (about 6 NM west) inbound landing and requested overhead. Told to report 2 mi southwest of field at which time I was told #2 following traffic turning base to final runway 33 and gabreski field. Was asked to report traffic in sight which I did. It became obvious that I would overtake traffic, so I made a wide left base for 33 before calling initial. This put me geographically over the beach and head-on to wbound traffic transiting the air traffic area. I heard traffic's initial call as 1900 ft, but he confirmed with tower he was at 1500 ft. I was at 1200 ft, I had strobes on, I didn't see his operating but he had a nice small aircraft. After that, the break (at 800 ft) was anticlimactic as was the landing next time. I'll confirm traffic transiting the air traffic area if I find myself having to position that far out due to pattern traffic. I think I might have been able to pick up the small aircraft earlier if I was not preoccupied with #1 traffic.

Title: 2 SMAS HAD AN NMAC IN THE FOK ATA.
Narrative: RPTED AT MORICHES INLET (ABOUT 6 NM W) INBOUND LNDG AND REQUESTED OVERHEAD. TOLD TO RPT 2 MI SW OF FIELD AT WHICH TIME I WAS TOLD #2 FOLLOWING TFC TURNING BASE TO FINAL RWY 33 AND GABRESKI FIELD. WAS ASKED TO RPT TFC IN SIGHT WHICH I DID. IT BECAME OBVIOUS THAT I WOULD OVERTAKE TFC, SO I MADE A WIDE L BASE FOR 33 BEFORE CALLING INITIAL. THIS PUT ME GEOGRAPHICALLY OVER THE BEACH AND HEAD-ON TO WBOUND TFC TRANSITING THE ATA. I HEARD TFC'S INITIAL CALL AS 1900 FT, BUT HE CONFIRMED WITH TWR HE WAS AT 1500 FT. I WAS AT 1200 FT, I HAD STROBES ON, I DIDN'T SEE HIS OPERATING BUT HE HAD A NICE SMA. AFTER THAT, THE BREAK (AT 800 FT) WAS ANTICLIMACTIC AS WAS THE LNDG NEXT TIME. I'LL CONFIRM TFC TRANSITING THE ATA IF I FIND MYSELF HAVING TO POS THAT FAR OUT DUE TO PATTERN TFC. I THINK I MIGHT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PICK UP THE SMA EARLIER IF I WAS NOT PREOCCUPIED WITH #1 TFC.
