Narrative:

En route for grb to auw airport we were advised that the auw TACAN/DME were OTS and center asked us what our intentions were with regard to the VOR approach at auw. We had studied that NOTAM prior to departure at grb and had determined that only the DME portion was inoperative and after checking the identify on the VOR we confirmed the fact the VOR was indeed operational. We then requested and were granted the approach clearance (VOR a) via the VOR to the auw airport. We proceeded direct the VOR and turned inbound (4000 ft assigned, 3000 ft initial approach altitude) and became VFR at 2000 ft above the airport and cancelled IFR. The NOTAM TACAN/DME OTS apparently leads or misleads one to think the VOR portion is also OTS.

Title: THE AUW DME WAS OTS MAKING THE VOR DME RWY 12 APCH UNAVAILABLE. NAVAID PROB.

Narrative: ENRTE FOR GRB TO AUW ARPT WE WERE ADVISED THAT THE AUW TACAN/DME WERE OTS AND CTR ASKED US WHAT OUR INTENTIONS WERE WITH REGARD TO THE VOR APCH AT AUW. WE HAD STUDIED THAT NOTAM PRIOR TO DEP AT GRB AND HAD DETERMINED THAT ONLY THE DME PORTION WAS INOP AND AFTER CHKING THE IDENT ON THE VOR WE CONFIRMED THE FACT THE VOR WAS INDEED OPERATIONAL. WE THEN REQUESTED AND WERE GRANTED THE APCH CLRNC (VOR A) VIA THE VOR TO THE AUW ARPT. WE PROCEEDED DIRECT THE VOR AND TURNED INBOUND (4000 FT ASSIGNED, 3000 FT INITIAL APCH ALT) AND BECAME VFR AT 2000 FT ABOVE THE ARPT AND CANCELLED IFR. THE NOTAM TACAN/DME OTS APPARENTLY LEADS OR MISLEADS ONE TO THINK THE VOR PORTION IS ALSO OTS.
