Narrative:
During taxi in, #1 engine was shut down to conserve fuel. Upon doing so, all electrical power, including batteries, was lost. This left the aircraft without any radios or gyroscopes (including the standby horizon). All attempts to reset circuit breakers, restart engine, obtain emergency power, etc, were futile. Note: the APU was inoperative on MEL. With no radio communication possible, the aircraft was escorted to the gate with assistance from port authority of ny/nj. The aircraft was handed over to maintenance for repair. We were very fortunate that this situation occurred on the ground in day VFR. Had this happened during takeoff in night heavy IFR, the results could be disastrous. In an airplane there should never be a situation in which this can occur. I believe it is a design flaw and should be investigated further and we have stated this to our company.

Title: AN ACR MDT CREW LOST ALL ELECTRICAL PWR ON TAXI IN, INCLUDING ITS BATTERIES.
Narrative: DURING TAXI IN, #1 ENG WAS SHUT DOWN TO CONSERVE FUEL. UPON DOING SO, ALL ELECTRICAL PWR, INCLUDING BATTERIES, WAS LOST. THIS LEFT THE ACFT WITHOUT ANY RADIOS OR GYROSCOPES (INCLUDING THE STANDBY HORIZON). ALL ATTEMPTS TO RESET CIRCUIT BREAKERS, RESTART ENG, OBTAIN EMER PWR, ETC, WERE FUTILE. NOTE: THE APU WAS INOP ON MEL. WITH NO RADIO COM POSSIBLE, THE ACFT WAS ESCORTED TO THE GATE WITH ASSISTANCE FROM PORT AUTHORITY OF NY/NJ. THE ACFT WAS HANDED OVER TO MAINT FOR REPAIR. WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE THAT THIS SIT OCCURRED ON THE GND IN DAY VFR. HAD THIS HAPPENED DURING TKOF IN NIGHT HVY IFR, THE RESULTS COULD BE DISASTROUS. IN AN AIRPLANE THERE SHOULD NEVER BE A SIT IN WHICH THIS CAN OCCUR. I BELIEVE IT IS A DESIGN FLAW AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER AND WE HAVE STATED THIS TO OUR COMPANY.
