Narrative:

In level flight at 3000 ft MSL and on a heading of 210 degrees and 180 KTS, we received a 'pull up' warning. I, the captain, immediately began a climb while the first officer reported to ATC that we were climbing due to GPWS. We topped out at 4000 ft MSL at which time ATC directed us to return to 3000 ft MSL, which we did. We were TCASII equipped but received no warnings.
