Narrative:

On this day my student and I were doing a series of touch-and-goes in the traffic pattern at avp. While in contact with the tower, we were cleared for takeoff. After climbing about 500 ft AGL we lost partial power north our engine due to a lack of fuel. The student had let the tank run dry. After this happened, we immediately switched to the other main tank, this being the left. We could not get the engine to start again. At this time I took control of the airplane and told ATC of the problem. They cleared me to land runway 4. We took off on runway 22. We glided safely to a landing and coasted off the runway. Afterwards the tug came and towed us in. We could not start the aircraft. During the whole incident I did not declare an emergency. I had plenty of time to communicate with ATC and got a clearance to land. I believe this was a priority situation. I had talked to ground control after the event and they did not request that I give them any kind of a report. Corrective action would be to pay more attention to the prelndg check. We used the gump check and he said he checked the gas, but in reality, he was just saying the check and not performing it.

Title: FUEL EXHAUSTION, DEAD STICK LNDG ON ARPT.

Narrative: ON THIS DAY MY STUDENT AND I WERE DOING A SERIES OF TOUCH-AND-GOES IN THE TFC PATTERN AT AVP. WHILE IN CONTACT WITH THE TWR, WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF. AFTER CLBING ABOUT 500 FT AGL WE LOST PARTIAL PWR N OUR ENG DUE TO A LACK OF FUEL. THE STUDENT HAD LET THE TANK RUN DRY. AFTER THIS HAPPENED, WE IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED TO THE OTHER MAIN TANK, THIS BEING THE L. WE COULD NOT GET THE ENG TO START AGAIN. AT THIS TIME I TOOK CTL OF THE AIRPLANE AND TOLD ATC OF THE PROB. THEY CLRED ME TO LAND RWY 4. WE TOOK OFF ON RWY 22. WE GLIDED SAFELY TO A LNDG AND COASTED OFF THE RWY. AFTERWARDS THE TUG CAME AND TOWED US IN. WE COULD NOT START THE ACFT. DURING THE WHOLE INCIDENT I DID NOT DECLARE AN EMER. I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO COMMUNICATE WITH ATC AND GOT A CLRNC TO LAND. I BELIEVE THIS WAS A PRIORITY SIT. I HAD TALKED TO GND CTL AFTER THE EVENT AND THEY DID NOT REQUEST THAT I GIVE THEM ANY KIND OF A RPT. CORRECTIVE ACTION WOULD BE TO PAY MORE ATTN TO THE PRELNDG CHK. WE USED THE GUMP CHK AND HE SAID HE CHKED THE GAS, BUT IN REALITY, HE WAS JUST SAYING THE CHK AND NOT PERFORMING IT.
