Narrative:

The first officer was making the takeoff. At approximately 90 KTS we heard a very loud bang followed almost immediately by a burning smell in the cockpit. I took control of the aircraft and aborted the takeoff. I taxied clear of the runway. We notified tower and accomplished our checklists. The air (smell) in the cabin cleared almost immediately, engine indications were normal, and since the aircraft seemed ok we returned to the gate. Subsequent inspection revealed blood on the #1 engine intake and feathers on the first stage compressor blades. Some blades also appeared to be bent. I notified the company dispatcher and flight operations duty officer. There no injuries or medical problems with any passenger.
