Narrative:
The event occurred during an small aircraft training flight. 2 tailwheel-qualified CFI's were on board with the front seat pilot flying to gain familiarity with teaching from the front seat. Carburetor heat was applied and the throttle closed in preparation for a power off stall at 2000 ft AGL. As the nose of the aircraft approached a stall attitude, the propeller stopped abruptly. Conditions were conducive to carburetor icing, the air temperature and dew point were 53 degrees F and 44 degrees F, respectively. These parameters plot in the region of maximum carburetor ice probability on a temperature/dew point probability chart. The throttle had been closed for approximately 10 seconds. The rear seat pilot assumed control of the airplane, selected a landing site in the hilly farmland below, unsuccessfully attempted a restart by diving the non-starter equipped airplane, and executed a landing uphill on a soft slope of approximately 10 percent grade. The gear collapsed on landing resulting in minor damage to the aircraft but no injuries to the occupants. Possible contributing factors: carburetor icing conditions. Although full carburetor heat was applied prior to closing the throttle, the heat may have been insufficient.

Title: SMA PERFORMING TRAINING MANEUVERS HAS ENG QUIT. EMER LNDG.
Narrative: THE EVENT OCCURRED DURING AN SMA TRAINING FLT. 2 TAILWHEEL-QUALIFIED CFI'S WERE ON BOARD WITH THE FRONT SEAT PLT FLYING TO GAIN FAMILIARITY WITH TEACHING FROM THE FRONT SEAT. CARB HEAT WAS APPLIED AND THE THROTTLE CLOSED IN PREPARATION FOR A PWR OFF STALL AT 2000 FT AGL. AS THE NOSE OF THE ACFT APCHED A STALL ATTITUDE, THE PROP STOPPED ABRUPTLY.
