Narrative:
Holding instructions were hold southeast as published 10 mi legs, expect further clearance of XY35, entered at XY22. Wind 270 at 70 KTS. Captain was having a hard time flying pattern. It was almost impossible to stay in because of the slant range on the DME and the wind. We only were given 10 DME. Station passage was occurring at 3.6 DME because of the slant range, so we only ad 6.4 DME for a pattern. Captain decided to adjust the pattern as deep as needed, but without calling center to advise. He decided to set to 20 DME and beyond. Center called at 27 DME and asked where we were going. I had advised the captain to call center but he is all knowing! Have you ever tried to talk to a brick? I.e., lack of cockpit resource management. Other aircraft were also having problems.
