Narrative:

Obtained clearance and taxi for IFR flight from ground controller. Controller was pleasant and unpressured so we 'chatted.' he wished a good trip to destination and instructed to 'monitor tower.' I thought I heard clearance, moved onto runway and departed. Tower controller pointed out non clearance at 300 ft and turned over to departure. Extraneous conversation was distracting but no excuse for moving onto runway and departing.
