Narrative:
Encountered tub on final approach to an unimproved strip on the tatina river -- turbulence resulted in excessive sink rate causing aircraft to touch down in rough terrain short of the strip -- nosewheel sheared off allowing propeller to strike ground. Strip was 750 ft in length -- well within the capability of the aircraft. However, performance of maximum performance short field landing allows no room for error. In this case, the pilot did not adequately anticipate factors that could influence aircraft. Short field unimproved lndgs/takeoff had been practiced earlier in the week but more practice and awareness would have lessened the probability of the final outcome.

Title: AN SMA PLT DAMAGED HIS ACFT WHEN MAKING A SHORT FIELD LNDG IN TURB.
Narrative: ENCOUNTERED TUB ON FINAL APCH TO AN UNIMPROVED STRIP ON THE TATINA RIVER -- TURB RESULTED IN EXCESSIVE SINK RATE CAUSING ACFT TO TOUCH DOWN IN ROUGH TERRAIN SHORT OF THE STRIP -- NOSEWHEEL SHEARED OFF ALLOWING PROP TO STRIKE GND. STRIP WAS 750 FT IN LENGTH -- WELL WITHIN THE CAPABILITY OF THE ACFT. HOWEVER, PERFORMANCE OF MAX PERFORMANCE SHORT FIELD LNDG ALLOWS NO ROOM FOR ERROR. IN THIS CASE, THE PLT DID NOT ADEQUATELY ANTICIPATE FACTORS THAT COULD INFLUENCE ACFT. SHORT FIELD UNIMPROVED LNDGS/TKOF HAD BEEN PRACTICED EARLIER IN THE WK BUT MORE PRACTICE AND AWARENESS WOULD HAVE LESSENED THE PROBABILITY OF THE FINAL OUTCOME.
