Narrative:
Climbing out of dfw, we were cleared to 12000 ft. The altitude was set in the altitude alerter, however, it was inoperative at the time. While my first officer was making company calls I climbed through 12800 ft before ATC asked our assigned altitude. We replied '12000 ft.' ATC then asked our actual altitude. We replied 'we are descending back to 12000 ft.' ATC replied 'don't do that standby.' after 30 seconds ATC said climb to 17000 ft. Later ATC handed us off and said 'good day.' cockpit distraction and an inoperative altitude alert contributed to the situation. Supplemental information from acn 241905: the contributing factors are the altitude alerter inoperative and me talking to company and the captain not paying attention.

Title: COMMUTER ON CLB OVERSHOOTS ASSIGNED ALT.
Narrative: CLBING OUT OF DFW, WE WERE CLRED TO 12000 FT. THE ALT WAS SET IN THE ALT ALERTER, HOWEVER, IT WAS INOP AT THE TIME. WHILE MY FO WAS MAKING COMPANY CALLS I CLBED THROUGH 12800 FT BEFORE ATC ASKED OUR ASSIGNED ALT. WE REPLIED '12000 FT.' ATC THEN ASKED OUR ACTUAL ALT. WE REPLIED 'WE ARE DSNDING BACK TO 12000 FT.' ATC REPLIED 'DON'T DO THAT STANDBY.' AFTER 30 SECONDS ATC SAID CLB TO 17000 FT. LATER ATC HANDED US OFF AND SAID 'GOOD DAY.' COCKPIT DISTR AND AN INOP ALT ALERT CONTRIBUTED TO THE SIT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 241905: THE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS ARE THE ALT ALERTER INOP AND ME TALKING TO COMPANY AND THE CAPT NOT PAYING ATTN.
