Narrative:
We were at 2500 ft doing lazy 8's. We were just at the top of the maneuver when the instructor saw the aircraft. We were on a westerly heading turning south with the pitch up and the right wing observing vision. The small aircraft Y took evasive action to the right and we missed by approximately 150-200 ft. We did not see him prior to the maneuver, and he was in cruise flight, probably doing about 160 KTS. We had no time to react, the aircraft was already past.

Title: SMA INSTRUCTOR STUDENT PLT VIOLATION OF FARS REF SEE AND AVOID CONCEPT AND ACROBATIC FLT WITHIN A FEDERAL AIRWAY. NMAC. UNKNOWN VFR XING TFC.
Narrative: WE WERE AT 2500 FT DOING LAZY 8'S. WE WERE JUST AT THE TOP OF THE MANEUVER WHEN THE INSTRUCTOR SAW THE ACFT. WE WERE ON A WESTERLY HDG TURNING S WITH THE PITCH UP AND THE R WING OBSERVING VISION. THE SMA Y TOOK EVASIVE ACTION TO THE R AND WE MISSED BY APPROX 150-200 FT. WE DID NOT SEE HIM PRIOR TO THE MANEUVER, AND HE WAS IN CRUISE FLT, PROBABLY DOING ABOUT 160 KTS. WE HAD NO TIME TO REACT, THE ACFT WAS ALREADY PAST.
