Narrative:
From den to lbb, left den with minimum release fuel due to heavy load, weight restriction, and ATC departure delays. We were re-rted when airborne via vectors direct laa direct ama direct lbb. Re-route due to line of severe thunderstorm, moving east, which eventually forced us some 50 NM east of laa before we could turn towards ama. We were also unable to climb to flight plan altitude due to WX and traffic, and were held down to 17000 ft MSL, resulting in much higher fuel flows than planned. About 50 NM north of ama we calculated our fuel situation and determined we would arrive in lbb with about 200 pounds (10 mins) fuel. We decided to land in ama for fuel and coordinated with dispatch via ama station operations. Refueled in ama, got new flight release, and continued flight to destination. Factors: unusually high payload. No flaps 0 degrees ATOG for departure runway. Could have carried about 500 pounds more fuel and/or payload if flaps 0 degrees had been available. Unanticipated WX and re-route of additional 100 NM. Correction: better fuel planning, additional takeoff data, for flaps 0 degrees ATOG.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MDT DIVERSION TO ALTERNATE ARPT FOR REFUELING. LANDED SHORT OF DEST ACCOUNT FUEL REMAINING LESS THAN REQUIRED BY FARS.
Narrative: FROM DEN TO LBB, LEFT DEN WITH MINIMUM RELEASE FUEL DUE TO HVY LOAD, WT RESTRICTION, AND ATC DEP DELAYS. WE WERE RE-RTED WHEN AIRBORNE VIA VECTORS DIRECT LAA DIRECT AMA DIRECT LBB. RE-RTE DUE TO LINE OF SEVERE TSTM, MOVING E, WHICH EVENTUALLY FORCED US SOME 50 NM E OF LAA BEFORE WE COULD TURN TOWARDS AMA. WE WERE ALSO UNABLE TO CLB TO FLT PLAN ALT DUE TO WX AND TFC, AND WERE HELD DOWN TO 17000 FT MSL, RESULTING IN MUCH HIGHER FUEL FLOWS THAN PLANNED. ABOUT 50 NM N OF AMA WE CALCULATED OUR FUEL SIT AND DETERMINED WE WOULD ARRIVE IN LBB WITH ABOUT 200 LBS (10 MINS) FUEL. WE DECIDED TO LAND IN AMA FOR FUEL AND COORDINATED WITH DISPATCH VIA AMA STATION OPS. REFUELED IN AMA, GOT NEW FLT RELEASE, AND CONTINUED FLT TO DEST. FACTORS: UNUSUALLY HIGH PAYLOAD. NO FLAPS 0 DEGS ATOG FOR DEP RWY. COULD HAVE CARRIED ABOUT 500 LBS MORE FUEL AND/OR PAYLOAD IF FLAPS 0 DEGS HAD BEEN AVAILABLE. UNANTICIPATED WX AND RE-RTE OF ADDITIONAL 100 NM. CORRECTION: BETTER FUEL PLANNING, ADDITIONAL TKOF DATA, FOR FLAPS 0 DEGS ATOG.
