Narrative:

Aircraft was pushed back by a ground agent due to close proximity to another parked aircraft. Nose gear pin was pulled into the locked position as required. The pin was not pushed back in after pushback. There is no cockpit indication of the pin placement. A takeoff was accomplished and the gear retracted. The nose gear would not come up due to the pin still being out. A landing was made, pin pushed in and a normal takeoff accomplished. As captain of the flight, I should have made sure the pin was pushed in after pushback, but failed to do so. The agent was an experienced person whom I have known for many yrs and who had pushed us back many times. Supplemental information from acn 246589: it seems like the mdt should have a caution light for this nose gear pin but it does not and there are no plans I know of to put one in the mdt.
