Narrative:

I was crossing midfield to enter published right downwind and an aircraft reported 'on downwind for runway 17.' I asked as to left or right traffic. He replied left -- or against published traffic. I called him in sight and as he was above me, I went below him at least 500 ft below. Over the CTAF he called me a 'son of a bitch.' I continued to enter right traffic and land runway 17 behind the small aircraft -- the aircraft in conflict. The other pilot was in the wrong place and did not report his position properly. While this was not too overly close, the point is being aware in air traffic area environment prevented this from turning into an accident.
