Narrative:
Center advised I was off course on VOR approach and to go around, climb and maintain 3000 ft and gave a heading, then another heading. My VOR indicated on course so it was confusing. While climbing on a new course I got busy checking vors against each other and climbed to 3700 ft. Cockpit overload. Solution: check vors on every flight if you anticipate making a VOR approach. My VOR was 30 degrees off within 5 mi of lax VOR.
